From Parking to Learning
With the help of Interfaith
Power and Light (now Interfaith Works), St. Stephens Episcopal
Cathedral converted a three-story parking garage into a school.
IP&L organized initial meetings and helped the congregation
decide to pursue LEED certification for the new building. It will
become the first religious based building to be certified through
the LEED green building rating system.
Through partnerships Interfaith Works is providing technical services
for the project, including energy modeling, daylighting studies,
materials consulting, project management and LEED documentation.
The results of the daylighting studies allowed St. Stephens
to secure additional funding for the project from neighbors, who
have now also decided to pursue a green approach for their new building.
The students at St. Stephens will study the connections between
their new building and their faith through the Exploration/Expression
curriculum. The study took place simultaneously with the renovation
of their new school building.
