Purchasing renewable power
is a tangible way that religious organizations can undertake environmental
stewardship.
Renewable power is electricity
generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind. These sources
most often have lower environmental impacts than other sources of
electricity production, such as coal, oil, and natural gas.
Generation and distribution
are the two basic steps that get electricity to your church or home.
Pennsylvania customers can choose who generates their electricity,
while the local utility distributes the electricity. No matter who
generates the electricity, it is delivered to a regional electricity
grid that supplies all of the electricity for the region. When renewable
power is purchased, it replaces other types of electricity in the
supply.
Who sells it?
Community Energy, Inc.
sells new wind energy in blocks of 100kwh. Consumers purchase the
blocks from Community Energy, Inc., and continue to pay their local
utility bills as before. Buyers will receive an annual certificate
indicating the amount purchased.
Green Mountain Energy
(www.greenmountain.com)
offers two products that include renewable energy sources. The generation
costs of Green Mountain will simply replace those of your local
utility company on your monthly bill, and you will continue to make
one payment to your local utility.
Native Energy (www.nativeenergy.com)
offers two products, WindBuilders
and CoolHome
with Remooable Energy ,
which support wind and methane electricity production respectively.
Consumers purchase both from NativeEnergy and continue to pay their
local utility bills as before.
There may also be local renewable
power providers in your area.
